Community responsibility 2 Years, 6 Months ago Karma: 0
CW*CW podcast # 2 is a topic very close to my heart. As a parent of 3, I am very concerned about what they are exposed to. I am a very open-minded person, but I understand that everything has a time and place. You both are absolutely correct about treating a family environment as a family environment. I believe that people have the right to share their adult-themed pictures with others, but, ALL RIGHTS COME WITH RESPONSIBILITES!!! If the choice is made to participate in any family environment, then the choice is made to conduct oneself in an appropriate manner. Failure to do so constitutes a misrepresentation of your intent, and is a LIE to the community!!! I never saw the offending pictures on PaganSapce, so I can't speak to their level of taste. But, if they are drawing this level of ire, then I can assume that I would also find them inappropriate in that community. Of course the red-blooded male part of me is now very curious, but I would never look to this community to find such images. There is always another place to find such things.

I believe that an adult that feels the need to expose themself in this way to a family environment has other mental issues. I find it no different than exposing oneself in a Chuck E. Cheese. Feeling the need for children to see this is a SICKNESS.

Blessings Orion,
Thank you for your reply to our podcast. Unfortunately the entire event was blown out of proportion. There were some border line pictures that concerned me as a parent. Starrfire was already on it by the time I blogged, and she reiterated the guidelines, changed some of the administration process and many of the people changed their profile pictures and added warnings to the top of their pages. In my eyes it was all about balance.

I think there is some misunderstanding what constitutes family friendly and that is why we wanted to talk about it on our show. I love your statement "All RIGHTS COME WITH RESPONSIBILITIES!" Very well said.

Again, I am so glad you listened and even happier that you posted your viewpoint!
Blessings,
Seren

Such is the nature of internet community... situations being blown out of proportion. I guess the bottom line is that folks just need think their actions through before initiating them. Maybe if the offending party had thought a little deeper about their pictures before posting them, this could have all been avoided. I think that sometimes people forget their "audience", especially in the pagan community. It's been my experience that children raised in pagan homes have a much broader view on the world than many others their age. We tend to educate our kids more than shield them from the truths of this world. Even so, there are still limits to what is age-appropriate, and what is not.

Again, I am glad this topic came up, and you nailed it perfectly. It is too often a forgotten subject.
